An American based company, The General Tire Rubber Company was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1915. Their factory in Mt Vernon, Illinois is one of the largest in North America producing over 10 million tires annually. They are the largest employer in Illinois south of Peoria. In 1987 the General brand was acquired by Continental A/G, a tire and auto parts manufacturer based in Germany. Continental is renowned for its manufacturing prowess and has modernized the Mount Vernon Factory and built a second factory in Sumter, South Carolina.
